The Trophy Room
2010 Opening Day Dove Hunt
The Austin Woods & Waters Club Opening Day Dove Hunt was a huge success at Steele and Beverly Zinser’s Salado Creek Ranch. The 50 attendees spread out their hunting throughout the day with 20 or so enjoying the relative coolness of a morning hunt with roughly half that number returning to finish their limit in the afternoon. They were joined by another 20 hunters who enjoyed a delicious steak dinner prepared by The Camp Cook – Patrick Mullin and some fine wing shooting. With this being a “Members Only” hunt, four prospects joined Austin Woods & Waters Club. We were happy to welcome Cliff Hall, Richard House, Laurence Terrell and John R. Thomas to the hunt and to the club. It was also great to see so many members enjoying one of the more social of hunting experiences in a safe and respectful manner. However, we did learn some of our hunters needed a lesson in “gate tending” as gates which should have been closed after passing through were left open. Always leave a gate the way you found it.

A Panhandle Hunt
-Steele Zinser
On Friday, 11DEC Dave Mahn gathered his charges for the next 3 days; Doug Dubois, Larry Navjar, Shawn Harrison and Steele. We rented a large van in Round Rock and set out for an 8-hour drive to Amarillo. We brought munchies and drinks of choice, non-alcoholic I must add. I knew Doug, Larry and Dave a little but not well, Shawn not at all. As hunting and fishing trips will go we made a point to learn a little about one-another’s priorities in life in the ensuing days. A topic of conversation as we were packing was Larry’s large bottle of Tide detergent. It made us wonder about his fetish for sanitation, (do laundry on a hunting trip?) Turn out it was empty; he planned on filling it with water to clean birds.
AWWC Duck / Crane Hunt
AWWC Migratory Game Bird Hunt
December 11 – 13, 2009
By Doug DuBois, Jr.
Five members of the Austin Woods & Waters Club recently traveled to the Panhandle of Texas to experience some out of sight migratory game bird hunting. Dave Mahn organized the trip with outfitter Panhandle’s Best and was accompanied by Doug DuBois, Jr., Shawn Harrison, Larry Najvar and Steele Zinser. We made the 8-hour drive to Amarillo Friday afternoon, December 11th and awoke to a chilly, but dry morning the following day. We followed our guide Mike Southerland east to a mostly frozen lake to hunt ducks and geese. The lakes were solidly frozen following over 10 days of sub-freezing temperatures, but our hunt was on the front end of a warming trend.
Steele Zinser lands 6x6 Elk in Colorado
On a recent trip to Colrado Steele Zinser landed a 6x6 Elk that will soon be proudly displayed over his fireplace at the Salado Creek Ranch. The Elk will also provide many a tasty meal during the long cold Texas winter.
